Written for Luis. I miss him already ;_; I must've been 12 or 13 when I wrote this. I think I was 13. We've thought he was leaving for like 2 years, and now he's finally doing it...

I'm sitting at my window
Watching your car drive down
To town
A bus will come to take you to the border to train.
Somewhere far away -
Because they don't actually offer that here,
That old brown station wagon
They had up on the road by the K-Mart
It sat there for ages and ages,
you worked all summer for it,
you'll come back and get it next year when you come home.
I never felt this lonely when you drove away before,
Back then I knew you'd be here again next week.
But not this time.
You're going away, so far from me,
to march
and say "URA"
and shoulder guns all day,
or whatever else you do in the army.
You better remember me,
cause if not I may have to smack you when you come to visit.
Did you know you're the best friend I ever had?
I only knew you a little while,
but it may as well have been the entirety of our lives.
I wish you weren't leaving,
But this has always been your dream.
You better fly out there and pursue it,
You just better,
Right now this minute, Luis Tough Guy Dude,
Even if I cry,
Or I'll smack you on the arm really hard
And then I'll say I'm sorry.
I remember your graduation, just a little while ago
You got up there on that stage
And me and Matt sang "Your chicken is dead" to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance
Really quietly in the audience,
Like we did in your car on the way there
And you gave your speech and we all clapped and your mum cried
Zayne was there too and I think maybe he was getting all emotional too
Because he looked away and said 'anyways' like he does when he wants to change the subject.
I gave you the graduation bear I made for you
We all felt happy
And kind of sad too,
because me and Zayne knew this meant you were leaving soon.
But you stayed with us for the rest of the summer.
You saved and saved for your 'Sweet Ride', working at the bait and tackle shop on the corner
That old brown station wagon
It's leaving my block now, maybe for good,
With the bear on the front seat
And that one photograph Mama took of you and me and Zayne on the roof of the barn
Where we climbed without permission,
But nobody really got mad or anything,
and Mama gave it to you to remember all of us by
I can still see the back window chalked up with good-luck messages
And Zayne just drew an airplane on the corner of it instead
But we know what it means -
It will sit at the airport until next summer
When you come back to get it
But I know you'll keep us and those messages with you in your heart wherever you go.
Goodbye, Luis.
Good luck.
You get out there and be happy,
And don't you dare be sad,
Don't you cry
Spread those wings and fly,
Luis the Tough Guy Dude,
Or I will smack you when you get back here.
